In Town: Parque El Metropolitano

Parque Metropolitano Guanguiltagua

This park, located on the hill Bellavista on the east side of Quito, is the largest park in South America. The park is 50% bigger than Central Park in New York. This park is great for hiking, running, and mountain biking. Most of the park is wooded with eucalyptus trees and traversed by dirt mountain biking trails. There are also main roads which are paved and comfortable for driving/jogging.

The three mains things that stick out about the park are the huge groups of mountain bikers that flock their every evening and weekend, the fresh air, and the bromeliads. The mountain bikers usual coalesce near the entrance, and jump in the bed of a truck for a ride to the top of the hill again.

The fresh air is amazing. On 6 de diciembre just blocks away, you are breathing nothing but diesel fumes and exhaust. As you walk up the hill (and are completely out of breath at this altitude), the air quality drastically changes. Not only is the air fresh and cool, but it has that nice eucalyptus smell.

The bromeliads are a group of plants, most of which do not grow in soil but rather on other plants. You can find 10-30 bromeliads per tree in some areas.
